Pathways in Visual Arts

The structure of Evergreen's curriculum is unique

There are as many pathways for study as students to pursue them.

Visual and Environmental Arts (VEA) faculty regularly teach in Core (First Year Student), intermediate and advanced interdisciplinary programs with faculty from other disciplines. The core programs for visual arts are generally year-long and taught by two or more VEA faculty.

  • painting
  • photography
  • printmaking
  • 3D design
  • sculpture
  • personal theme work

Intermediate/Advanced Visual Arts Programs are generally taught by one or two faculty members from the Expressive Arts and give students the opportunity to explore specific themes more deeply.

Student Originated Studies (SOS) give groups of students the opportunity to pursue individual or small group themes in a learning community with one faculty.

Individual Learning Contracts are for advanced students ready to focus intensely on a specific theme or media with one or more faculty as "sponsors" for any combination of credits/quarters.

Expressive Arts Senior Thesis contracts are awarded to a select few students every year as an opportunity for students in the Expressive Arts to synthesize and culminate work in a major creative project

A general plan for how a student may pursue visual arts in a liberal arts context at Evergreen

  • First year: A Core Interdisciplinary Program (with or without an arts component)
  • Second year: An Interdisciplinary Program with an arts component
  • Third year: An Intermediate/Advanced Visual Arts Program
  • Fourth year: Individual Learning Contracts, Student Originated Studies, Intermediate/Advanced Visual Arts or Interdisciplinary Programs, or Senior Thesis
