I think of art-making as functioning as visual essays or as scientific experiments; and less as a diaristic document. Therefore, if the image or form is to communicate in visual terms, one must have something to say.
As an artist, I undertake considerable research in preparation to make my own work. As an educator, I encourage students to learn a subject well enough to form an opinion and use the image or form as the vehicle to communicate that opinion. A liberal arts education helps artists do just that - explore a range of disciplinary ideas and methodologies and apply them visually.
